#Breaking: Ethiopia now holds a new tree-planting world record
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed started a campaign to plant 200 million trees in one day. This was part of an initiative to plant 4 billion trees in order to combat deforestation, drought and climate change in the country.
On July 29, 2019, Ethiopia has significantly exceeded the plan by planting 353,633,660 tree. This figure set the country to hold a new tree-planting world record in 12-hours, according to Dr. Getahun Mekuria, Minister, Ministry of Innovation and Technology. The world tree-planting record in a single day was held by India, where over 50 million trees were planted in a single day in 2016. Ethiopia has managed to plant 7 times more trees in a single day and convincingly hold a tree-planting world record.
